The short answer
Choose steps with wide treads, a low rise between levels, a carpeted surface and a footprint that will not tip. Three broad steps suit most sofas, and two are usually enough for a bed that already sits low.

Why we like it: Three wide, carpeted steps break one big jump into small even ones, which is far easier on stiff hips and shoulders and much less of a landing to brace for.
Steps need less floor space, and a cat who is still moving reasonably well often prefers them because each tread is a solid place to pause. If your cat is already stiff enough that lifting a leg is a struggle, a ramp is the better answer.
A rise of about six inches per step at most, treads wide enough for all four paws, and a carpeted surface. Look at the base too: a narrow plastic frame that slides on hardwood gives back the confidence you just bought.
Butt the top step right against the furniture so there is no gap to bridge. If the floor is smooth, put a grip pad under the whole unit. Give your cat a couple of days to investigate on their own.

A gentle slope lets your cat walk up to their favourite spot instead of launching at it, and it is kinder on the way down.
