Eating and drinking

How do I get my senior cat to eat and drink more?

Older cats drink less than they should, partly because a low bowl is awkward to reach and still water is unappealing. Raising the bowl a few inches, widening it so whiskers do not brush the sides, and offering moving water all help. A cat who suddenly eats or drinks much more or less than usual needs a vet, not a new bowl.

Raised cat bowls with a tilted stand

Raised cat bowls with a tilted stand

Why we like it: Raising the bowl a few inches takes strain off the neck and shoulders, and a slight tilt means your cat barely has to lower their head to reach the food.

Ceramic water fountain for cats

Ceramic water fountain for cats

Why we like it: Moving water encourages cats to drink more, which matters more as hydration needs change with age. Ceramic is heavier, so a senior cat cannot tip it.

Frequently asked questions

Why do whiskers matter at mealtimes?

Whiskers are highly sensitive. When they press against a narrow bowl with every bite, some cats eat less to avoid the feeling. Wide, shallow dishes remove that.

Do water fountains really work?

Often, yes. Cats are drawn to moving water, and many owners report a clear increase in drinking after switching from a still bowl.

Should I raise the food bowl too?

Raise the food bowl if your cat is stiff in the neck or shoulders. Keep water low and easy to reach, and never make a cat climb to drink.
