Litter box and accidents
Why is my senior cat missing the litter box?
Most missed boxes in older cats come from the box itself, not behaviour. A high rim is hard on stiff hips, and a long walk to a box in a dark corner of the house is hard on a cat who cannot hold on as long as they once could. Lower the entry, shorten the journey, add light, and keep the area dry.

Products worth considering

Low-entry litter box for senior cats
Why we like it: A box with a low, scooped entrance is the single easiest change for an older cat who can no longer hop over a high rim, and it is simple to scoop from the side.

Washable waterproof pee pads
Why we like it: Absorbent pads placed around the box catch the misses and make the whole litter area easier to keep clean, dry and free of lingering smell.

Motion-activated night light
Why we like it: A soft amber light that comes on as your cat approaches means they can find the box at night without feeling their way along the hallway in the dark.

Litter mat that traps scatter
Why we like it: Stops tracked litter from becoming a slippery scatter across hard floors, and the soft surface is kinder to tender paws on exit.

Enzyme odor eliminator spray
Why we like it: Older cats miss the box sometimes. Enzyme spray removes the scent marker completely, which makes repeat accidents in the same corner far less likely.

Cat attract litter additive
Why we like it: A pinch sprinkled into a familiar box encourages a hesitant older cat to keep using it, especially helpful after a move or a litter change.

Why a Motion-Activated Night Light Helps Senior Cats at Night
Dimming eyesight makes a familiar hallway feel strange after dark. A soft automatic light removes the guesswork.
Read the guideFrequently asked questions
Should I add a second litter box?
Yes. One on each floor your cat spends time on removes the whole problem of a long trip, and it is often the single change that stops accidents.
Is a covered litter box better?
Usually not for an older cat. Covered boxes are harder to step into, hold odour in, and stop a cat from watching what is coming, which many seniors find unsettling.
How often should I scoop?
Twice a day for a senior cat. Older cats are fussier about a dirty box and much quieter about complaining about it.
