How to Get a Senior Cat to Drink More Water

The short answer

Older cats are often mildly dehydrated because they drink little and lose the habit of seeking water out. Offer moving water, keep bowls wide and shallow, put several stations around the house, and switch to wet food. Any sudden change in drinking needs a vet.

Why cats drink too little

Cats evolved to take most of their moisture from prey, so their thirst drive is naturally weak. With age it weakens further, while their kidneys ask for more. By the time you notice, they are often already a little behind.

The changes that work

Moving water first, because cats are drawn to it. Wide shallow bowls second, because whiskers pressing on a rim put some cats off drinking. Then more stations, so water is never more than a few steps away. Wet food at one meal a day adds a surprising amount of water on its own.

What to watch for

A cat drinking much more than usual is as much of a signal as one drinking less, and both warrant a vet visit rather than a change of bowl. Keep an eye on how much the bowl drops each day so you have something concrete to describe.

How to set this up

  1. 01Add a circulating fountain in a spot your cat already passes.
  2. 02Switch narrow bowls for wide, shallow ones.
  3. 03Put a second water station on each floor.
  4. 04Offer wet food at one meal a day.
  5. 05Track the daily drop in the bowl and mention changes to your vet.
